The Two-Way Street of Franchising Opportunities
Relationships are hard work. That’s true whether the subect is marriage, parent and child, or even franchisee/franchisor. But you’ll get out of it what you put into it–and the rewards can be sweet indeed.
Those with the best franchises realize that, whatever the business model, a franchisor can’t find success without having successful franchisees. But there’s a lot that franchisors can do to ensure that success. The first thing, of course, is to maintain effective two-way communication with the franchisees. In today’s world of faxes and emails, good old-fashioned verbal communication is becoming rare. But top franchisors know that nothing beats a clear, face-to-face conversation with the franchisee in order to encourage him or to train him in running the business. If the franchisee feels that you are there to help him in both good and challenging times, then the franchisee will be more motivated towards success, and will share the achievements with you.
Second, to keep that franchise opportunity running smoothly, you may need to discipline that franchisee like a good parent. Franchisees are free businessmen, but by agreeing to your franchising rules, they are bound to run the establishments in the way you prescribe. You must see that all stringent quality checks and customer care services are on par with your company. Otherwise, your brand name may suffer. This is especially so in the case of the food industry, where one slip can affect the entire reputation. As a result, you, as a franchisor, may have to be strict.
On the other hand, it’s important to avoid suffocating the franchisee, which will keep his business from developing. If you doggedly follow rules and regulations without consulting the ground reality of a franchisee’s position, then it will hamper the success of the business. A good franchisor always listens to the franchisee and does not always impose its decisions on them. What works for the company in one place will not necessarily work in another. Again, keep those lines of communication open, and you’ll likely find your way to success together.
