Preparing for Seasonal Slumps with Franchise Opportunities
When you join a business, assume that there will be peaks and valleys. Slumps will happen, either for economic grounds or seasonal reasons. The good news, however, is that those times will give you an opportunity to test your business sense. So rather than hiding your head in the sand, learn to face your slumps head on. You really can work them to your advantage.
Some businesses are directly affected by the time of the year. For example, handyman services and lawn care will slow in the winter, and the tanning industry might slow in the summer. But don’t panic as these seasons come; be prepared, and you will still emerge a winner. Here are some pointers:
• Use slow months for networking: Networking is very important no matter which franchising industry you’re in. So, when your business takes a turn, focus on meeting people who matter. Get cozy with the local chamber of commerce and other business organizations. Pass your card around. If you have been in business for more than a year and have developed a reputation, consider giving speeches on business-related topics. On the other hand, if you’re new to the business, attend such seminars. That way, you can expand your knowledge and your network as well.
• Utilize this time for marketing: When things go slow, the first thing that gets cut is the advertising budget. But, remember, this is only a seasonal slump; once the time is over, you’ll be back in business with a bang! Hence, it is important that people do not forget your name. It’s not necessary that you go for heavy blitzkrieg. Sponsor a charity event or volunteer in any one of them. Sometimes, even advertising companies give discounts during slump periods; make use of such opportunities to stay ahead of the competition.
• Keep in touch with your regulars: Repeat customers come back if they feel special. Reach out when they least expect it. Send them seasonal greetings or offer incentives for their next visit.
• Diversify: This is especially important for home maintenance companies. It is true that people do not need lawn services in winter; but they do put up lights during Christmas! One such company that takes advantage of this is Decorating Elves.
• Use the time for various works: Have a look and you’re likely to find some pending paperwork. Why not use this off period to clear it? Also, keep a check on your stock. And finally, take some time to relax. Have a party and enjoy the season to the fullest in order to recharge your batteries for the coming busy season!

I saw your posting and thought you’d be able to relate or would be interested in getting to know my client who is a serial entrepreneur and franchise expert. His name is Richard Simtob and he has directed the expansion and propelled Wireless Toyz Cellular Superstores into national mega-chain status. In what’s been described as “breakneck speed growth,” Wireless Toyz catapulted onto 2006 Inc. 500’s list of fastest growing privately-held U.S. companies and is ranked #1 in category and 98th fastest-growing franchise by Entrepreneur Magazine in the 2008 Franchise 500.
Before becoming president of finance and franchise development at Wireless Toyz, Simtob was Chief Operating Officer there, managing the expansion of its franchise network through the opening of 66 new stores in 2006 to a total of 180 locations.
Prior to Wireless Toyz, Simtob earned acclaim as a business innovator co-founding Talking Book World Corporation, America’s largest chain of retail outlets specializing in renting audiobooks. He built the company from a concept to a 45-store chain that, by 1999, ranked number 164 on the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing privately held companies. Each year under his leadership Talking Book World was named among Entrepreneur’s top 500 franchises.
