5 Golden Rules for Running a Home-Based Business
There are quite a few reasons why people buy a franchise that is home-based. Some go for it to be with their family, some love it for the flexible working hours and some prefer this field because, most of the concepts are low cost franchise opportunities. Whatever may be your reason for starting a franchise from this category, here are 5 golden rules that you must abide by, if you want to find success in your business.
1. Designate a specific area as office: The first rule of home-based business is to have a proper office. Even a desk can be an office, if you use it exclusively for your business! Make sure you demarcate an area in the house, which will be your office during the working hours. Also ensure that no one disturbs you when you are in your “office”, except in case of emergencies.
2. Take a separate telephone line and a computer: Though it may push your start-up cost a bit, but investing in these office equipments will save you from a lot of hassles later on. How could you like your daughter hogging the phone line while an important client call is due? Think about the horror when you see that your partner has accidentally deleted your minutely-planned client presentations? Stop these problems from happening by investing in a separate telephone line and computer.
3. Be present in the office on time and wearing appropriate attire: As it is your home office, you shouldn’t wear your pajamas all day! Remember, after starting a franchise, it becomes your profession. So, appear in the most professional manner while you are doing the job. We are not suggesting that you wear business formals at home (that could be ridiculous), but any smart clean dress will be enough. Also, attend your “office” everyday at a specific time like you did when you had a regular job.
4.Take breaks from time to time: Being professional doesn’t mean that you have to take out the fun part of starting a franchise that is home-based. Take breaks once in a while; look after the kids, have lunch with your partner or take the afternoon off to toss a football around with the children in the front yard. After all, they were the reasons why you opted for home business in the first place.
5.Be professional in every way: When people see someone working from home, they somehow feel skeptical about the level of professionalism the person can deliver. So, no matter which franchise opportunity you have bought, being professional in every way is a must. As with the earlier point of dressing rightly, be sure to return phone calls or email queries within reasonable time-period. If you are with a client, make sure that no one disturbs you in any way. If it’s not entirely possible, then meet the clients outside. That will also give you a reason to go out for sometimes after working for long hours in your home office.
