Why You Need a Mentor to Start a Franchise Business

Ever since the start of civilization, there has been mentor and protégé. It’s important in every profession; whether you are a salesman or a business owner, you will need someone to teach you the basic rules of the game. If you are starting a franchise, then you are in a better position because the franchisor acts as a mentor in many cases, advising you and guiding you in the proper direction. But a franchisor or a business partner, for that matter, cannot strictly be called a mentor. A mentor must be someone who doesn’t have any conflict of interest when he/she is in a mentor-protégé relationship.

That is why you need a mentor from outside your immediate business to give you an impartial third-party view. The person must be successful in his or her own profession (it’s not necessary that he/she will be from your line of work) and must be willing to help you. If you can find such a person from your relatives or friend circle, then you are the lucky one. Many opt for professional mentoring classes like those that are arranged by The Alternative Board. You can also join websites where you can find people from your line of work and many of them are eager to help the newcomers. Franchise Ultra Lounge is one such website, which a melting pot for future franchisees, expert franchisors and people just entering the field of franchise business.

So, if you are interested in franchise business, you can join this site to find a worthy mentor. Don’t feel that you are imposing or taking a favor from your mentor, a mentor is as much helped by the protégé as is the latter. A protégé helps the mentor to be a better leader; a skill which he/she can use in his/her own affairs. As a protégé, you should choose someone who can help you with contacts in time of need (but don’t select a person just for that!). Always let him or her know that you have worked on his or her idea and the subsequent results. Though it’s a life-long relationship, but you should evolve slowly as time progresses. Relying too much on your mentor can harm your personal growth. So, slowly learn to take decisions without going to the mentor; as he or she will also want to see his or her protégé to become a successful expert of the field!
