Franchising success will come only if you choose the right franchise business for sale. To achieve that, you have to follow a very strict due diligence. And your due diligence will be successful only when you gather the right information by asking the right questions at the very beginning. To help you here are some of those pertinent questions:
• How long have you been in the business? The franchise business is proper transfer of the franchisor’s accumulated business experience to a novice franchisee starting a franchise under it. Hence, a successful franchisor must have years of experience in its field before offering franchise business for sale. But, it’s not that it must have years of experience as a franchisor; if it’s successful in its original business, then it can also be taken as a parameter.
• How many open units you have? If you are not keen on taking risks as the very first franchisee of a franchisor, then don’t forget to ask this important question to your prospective franchisor. When the franchisor gives you a number, look at the time-period of its operation as a franchise concept. Neither a too high nor a too low number is good. The first means that the franchisor may be expanding too fast too soon. On the other hand, low number of units over a long period time is an indication that there’s not much demand for the franchise business for sale offers from the company.
• Do you offer financial support? Getting financial assistance is one of the main reasons why people join the franchise business in the first place. So, make sure your franchisor is offering one or other kind of financial assistance.
• How long is the training program? Teaching the franchisees how to franchise is the duty of the franchisor. So, ask how long the initial training is going to be. Any top franchise will usually give minimum 2 weeks of training.
