The franchise industry is undergoing a sea change. As more and more people turn to franchising as a career, some rules of the franchise business are changing. One of the most important ones is regarding the nature of a franchise owner. Previously, these franchisees were were expected to work in their business full-time. Franchisors didn’t offer their franchise businesses to people who could not commit full-time. But now passive ownership is being allowed by many franchise opportunities.
This has attributed to the change in the section of the people applying for franchise business for sale offers. Earlier, for certain franchise opportunities like hairstyling or fitness franchise, people related to the industry used to apply. Now even corporate people have found out the benefits of starting a franchise. But they are reluctant to leave their current job whereas their expertise in the areas of management, sales and marketing can enhance the success of the franchise opportunities. So, the franchisors take the middle path and allow competent candidates to act as passive owners.
There’s another reason behind the development of passive ownership. The advancement of science and technology, especially internet, has made it possible for someone to virtually control another place without being present there. That is what many franchise opportunities allow their passive franchisees to operate their units through remote surveillance. For example, passive owners of Snap Fitness can monitor the coming and going of members through an elaborate key-card system. Others allow the passive owners to see the stocks over the net and order accordingly. But the main aspect of passive ownership that every franchisor needs is employing a competent manager. The passive owner is required to work in perfect collaboration with the manager to run the business properly.
